Average citizen has control to choose their politicians but not the policy. This may sound an ambiguous statement but you have to read Schumpeter to understand what I am saying.
While I want more people to vote instead of sitting on their asses on election day, it's not a guarantee that electoral outcome will be different. The very basic flaw about democracy is its underlying premise that electorate are rational - that electorate can take informed and reasoned decisions. Reality is that people - the electorate - are not necessarily informed & they hardly have capacity understand policy & politics.
Of course, there are many other problems with democracy, like oligarchical control of politics. But oligarchical control of politicians is a feature of liberal democracy & not a bug. Read Socialism, Capitalism & Democracy by Schumpeter.
I know there is no guarantee, but people MUST try.
Democracy must be enacted not only during election time, but ALSO in between. It must be a continuous organised process.
After elections local citizens committee's should monitor what their politician is doing and on whose behalf that happens. Tell them when they are on the wrong track.
You people are their bosses !
Next election cycle vote them out if they do not serve their local voters.
Here are some, but not all selection criteria
- No secrets from the voters.
- No money from anyone else than a human being. No corporations, retail chains, billionaires or millionaires.
Populists never get what they want and they never want what they get. Their idealism about how things should be is almost always hijacked by cynical leaders who take advantage of their idealism to rise to power and then, never give it up! We seem to be a short sighted species who are never satisfied with what we've got.
Excellent thread of posts! Keep going. Congrats
"The reality of Parliament (Congress in US) is quite simple. The politicians are not representatives of people but of donor class or oligarchs."
This absolutely true and it is due to the amount of Corruption, that is allowed to the Oligarchs and the Representatives.
All this is enabled by Corruption !
Corruption must be stopped by the Voters.
People should turn out to vote. No matter what outcome they expect.
The future is fluid and there are no guarantee of things staying the same.
How Corruption works :
1. Corruption buys Politicians.
2. Politicians create rigged Policies.
3. Rigged policies create unfair market conditions.
4. Unfair market conditions create unfair profits for the worst participants in the economy.
5. The worst participants use their money to further corrupt politicians.
The cycle then continues ad nauseum. 🐍🇺🇸🐍
It has also been proven by this research.
The conclusion was that the average vcitizen has NO INFLUENCE om Policies.
